πŸ”‹POLIS Voting Power

Learn all about PVP, which is what you need to be able to vote on Proposals

Locking Your POLIS Tokens

In Star Atlas, you need to lock up your POLIS tokens if you want to help decide how things are run (governance). Think of POLIS tokens like tickets that give you voting power, and the longer you’re willing to hold onto them without using them, the more voting power you get.

To make this happen, Star Atlas created a program called the POLIS Locker. When you lock your POLIS tokens in this locker, they go into a special escrow account where you can’t take them out early or transfer them. In return, you get POLIS Voting Power (PVP), which is what you need to vote on proposals. The longer you lock your tokens, the more PVP you get. For example, if you lock 1 POLIS for 6 months, you get 1 PVP, but if you lock it for the maximum time of 5 years, you get 10 PVP.

This system favors community members with a long-term conviction in the Star Atlas vision. It also protects against certain types of attacks, like just-in-time voting or flash loans, where people could borrow tokens just to vote and return them right away. Note that you can only choose one lock period per wallet, so if you want to lock tokens for different amounts of time, you’ll need to use separate wallets.

Calculating Your PVP Multiplier

The formula for POLIS Voting Power is straightforward: The amount of POLIS you lock times a certain multiplier is how much PVP you have. The multiplier is directly dependent on the duration of the lock.

Here is a table that shows the lock durations and the resulting multiplier:

PVP Decays Over Time

Your POLIS Voting Power (PVP) slowly decreases over time as your (remaining) lock period gets shorter. This is because the closer you get to the end of your lock-up period, the less voting power you have left.

For example, if you lock 400 POLIS for one year, you’ll start with 800 PVP, but this amount will slowly shrink as the year goes by. It’s the same as if you locked 200 POLIS for two years or 100 POLIS for four years. The longer you lock your tokens, the more PVP you start with, but it will always go down bit by bit as the unlock time gets closer.

POLIS Locker Rewards

Beyond PVP, locking your POLIS is also rewarded with additional POLIS tokens. You can read all about that in this support article from ATMTA:
